My Figma File Lifecycle
July 22nd, 2025
This is how I typically create and maintain my Figma files — a kind of project lifecycle. The exact process depends on the project and whether I'll be collaborating or handing off the file.
1. The Beginning
My Figma is usually a mess at this stage. Sometimes it's just inspirational screenshots and rough ideas. Other times, if I have a clear vision, I dive straight into designing. Either way, this phase is chaotic and exploratory.
2. The Middle
By now, I have a solid idea of what I want. This is when I start drafting a UI kit, rough brand guidelines, and tidying up the document. I start turning elements into Components to make things easier.
3. The Post-Middle
I don't think a project is ever truly finished, so I don't call this "The End." This phase is about refining, iterating, and filling gaps — adding missing views, states, and details. This is where I spend around 80% of my time.
